These organizations issue the proper licenses on behalf of thousands of songwriters and music publishers, for the works contained within their repertory. The ACEMLA Performance License is recognized in the industry as the most convenient and cost effective method for music users to obtain the permission that is required by law.
Similarly, to the other PRO’s, ACEMLA offers blanket license agreements that authorize the performance of all the compositions in the ACEMLA repertory. If you are using someone’s property (song) there is a moral and legal obligation to obtain the owner’s permission. Under the Copyrights Law of the United States, anyone who publicly performs copyrighted music is required to obtain advance permission from the copyrights owner, or their representative. If you publicly perform any copyrighted song without proper authorization you are breaking the law and may be held liable for damages from a minimum of $750 up to a maximum of $150,000 per song played!
The Copyrights Law of the United States, and subsequent case law assigns the RESPONSIBILITY for obtain authorization for the performance of music played in rented or leased areas to the (Venues), owner/ operator of the establishment ( Hotel, Restaurant, Municipalities, Universities, Arenas, Convention Center, Performing Music Art Center, Radio and TV Station, Cable and Satellite Operators, Shopping Malls, Department Stores, Supermarkets, Pharmacies, Banks, others).
